Youth and Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba was on Wednesday forced to apologise to MPs after a heated afternoon session.

The CS was forced to also withdraw his letter questioning MPs' knowledge on the matter of alleged mismanagement at the ministry.

National Assembly Majority leader Kimani Ichung'wah had tabled a letter written by Namwamba which alleged that lawmakers had been seized of hearsay regarding mismanagement at his ministry.

Ichung'wah said the contents of the letter were condescending and imputed bad motives on the house's oversight mandate.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula asked Namwamba to withdraw and apologise over his letter which he said was written in 'bad faith'.

"May I therefore with a lot of respect withdraw the letter and unreservedly apologise to this house," Namwamba said after stinging attacks by MPs.

The CS said he respects the house and recognises that he fully subjects himself to its oversight role.

During the session, Ichung'wah declared that he does not hold briefs for any cabinet secretary when it comes to matters of being held to account.

The Kikuyu MP said he would hold CSs to account with gusto just like a member of the minority party regardless of his high-ranking position in the Kenya Kwanza hierarchy.

"There is a misconstrued perception that as leader of the majority I hold brief for cabinet secretaries, I am hired by the people of Kikuyu and the Kenya Kwanza alliance to lead them as the first among equals," he said.

"That does not take away my role to hold any cabinet secretary to account. When it comes to holding anyone to account, I will do so with gusto and energy just like the leader of a minority."

Ababu was responding to concerns by MPs that an athletics team that was dispatched to represent the country in Berlin was abandoned.
