Comedian and scriptwriterAbel Mutua's wife, Judy Nyawira has come clean on why she tries as much as possible to minimise contact with her in-laws.

The reason for that is trauma that she experienced in the past, something that made her make the decision when she got married.

During an interview with YouTuber Lynn Ngugi, Judy said that after her father's death 21 years ago, her mother’s in-laws turned on her and threw them out of their home and took their late father’s wealth, using the lack of a will as a caveat.

This happened despite the fact that her mom was a devoted housewife.

“Everything they had built with my dad was in his name. So when the in-laws decided to do whatever they did, she had no means to claim."

From that day on things took a terrible turn for her as her mom now had to work making a measly Sh200 as a cleaner, an experience that motivated Judy to become the hard worker she is.

“I would accompany mom to the market where we would sweep for as low as Sh200. Starting from scratch was hard."

Nyawira didn't forget this experience and though she enjoys a good relationship with her in-laws she says she is well aware anything can happen.

“Of course I have in-laws but if there is something I strive to do is stay away from my in-laws. We have a very cordial relationship but I always try to keep a distance and it’s because of what I saw my mum go through with her in-laws,” she added.

Going further in her recollection Judy stated that thankfully things changed for the better as her mom got a better-remunerated job that saw the quality of Judy's life change.

“Our breakthrough came when mom got a job in Karatina town. I was in High School at that time and life gradually changed for the better. Mom could now afford to escort me to a supermarket and buy me biscuits, blue band, and other goodies plus give me Sh500 pocket money before I left for school.”
