In a second wave of protests against recent tax hikes, Kenyan cities witnessed a series of shocking and outrageous stunts on 12th of June, capturing the attention of the nation and the internet.

Stone-throwing demonstrators clashed with police in various cities, unfortunately  leading to  fatalities.

Amidst the chaos, numerous incidents unfolded that have now gone viral, showcasing the frustration and desperation of the protesters.

  • An activist chains himself on a post: An activist was arrested after locking himself with a chain on a post in Nairobi while carrying a plaque that read colonialism never really ended and poverty is modern day slavery, while lamenting the high cost of living and unemployment, the man gave the police a hard time as they relentlessly searched for he keys.
  • Supermarket looting on TikTok live: In Kitengela, a group of individuals brazenly robbed a supermarket while live-streaming on TikTok. The video showed people casually moving in and out of the store, with one voice boldly proclaiming, "Uchumi ni mbaya" (the economy is bad).
  • Returning officer: In Pipeline, a fearless protester managed to redirect a launched tear gas canister back towards a group of riot police, causing panic among the officers who swiftly retreated to safety.
  • Police Post Torched: Another TikTok live stream from Kitengela revealed protesters setting fire to a police post. As the police fled the scene, looters could be seen grabbing furniture from the post.
  • Fearless Walk: In Pipeline, a viral video astonished Kenyans as a man boldly walked through a group of riot police without any resistance or intervention from the officers. His audacious act both amused and astonished viewers online.
  • Express Highway Vandalism: Mlolongo protesters chose to disrupt the flow of traffic by vandalizing the express highway. They dismantled rail guards, broke barriers, and upended flower pots, creating impassable barricades around the SGR terminus, bringing transportation to a standstill.

  • Highway Cooking: In Kisii, a man staged a unique protest by cooking ugali (maize meal) in the middle of the highway using a jiko (portable stove). His act symbolized the high cost of essential food products, particularly unga (maize flour).

  • Matatu Operators Engage in Games: At the Nanyuki and Nyeri main stage, matatu operators resorted to playful activities like football and rope skipping to protest the exorbitant fuel prices. Matatu operations were temporarily suspended as part of the demonstration.

  • Catapult Assault: Kisii protestors employed a homemade catapult to launch stones at the police, showcasing their determination and frustration with the authorities.
