Kenya Editors Guild on Saturday elected Zubeida Kananu from the Standard Media Group as the president of the guild.

Prior to her election as president of the Kenya Editors Guild, Kananu served as the vice president guild, a position that has now been taken up by BBC's Ruth Nesoba.

Zubeida won with 72 votes against her competitor Sammy Muraya from Journalists for Human Rights who garnered 36.

110 people participated in the election.

The Returning Officer Tom Onyango announced the winner at Nairobi Club. Kananu will take over from Churchill Otieno.

Kananu while reacting to the win, said she was elated of the new position.

"I am very happy and I lack words to express myself. When I joined, EC Churchill held my hand, he brought us together as colleagues. I make a commitment to serve you all and I promise not to let you down," Kananu said.

She thanked everyone for believing in her saying there is so much going on that the media must ensure the safety and security of journalists.

"We will take care of our journalists on the ground even during demonstrations," she said.

Ruth garnered 73 votes against her competitor James Ng'ang'a Mbugua from People Daily who garnered 35.

The editors also elected unopposed Radio Africa Group digital Editor Francis Mureithi as the council member of Online.

Standard Media Group Linda Bach was retained as the Council Member of Print.
