Tithe refers to one tenth of annual produce or earnings, formerly taken as a tax for the support of the Church and clergy.
When we pay tithing we show gratitude for all that God has given us and return to Him a portion of what we have received.
Back in the day, Tithing was used to build temples and meetinghouses, translate and publish the scriptures, do missionary and family history work, and in other ways build God's kingdom on earth.
There are three types of tithes mentioned in the Old Testament.
Namely
- The Levitical tithe
- The feast tithe
- The poor tithe

These tithes were not given to the same people. They were also provided for different needs.
The Levitical tithe was considered the sacred tithe. It was the first tenth of the harvest and was consecrated to God. It was given to the Levites, a tribe that was set aside to be priests and caretakers of the tabernacle and its furnishings. They were not allowed to own land, so this tithe made provision for them.
The feast tithe was used to fund trips to Jerusalem and religious festivals. Unlike the Levitical tithe, this tithe was kept as a type of savings. Jews were required to travel to Jerusalem for certain occasions, such as the Feast of Tabernacles, which was a week-long fall festival commemorating the 40-year journey of the Israelites in the wilderness. The week-long journey costs money, and tithe provided for these expenses.
The poor Tithe
This was paid once every year.
It was mainly for the poor, orphans and the widows in the society.
