The content creator Joy Kendi narrated how she went to an award show with an outfit that cost her only 50 shillings.
In a throwback photo posted by Brenda Wairimu in her socials commemorating the "Chaguo la Teneez CHAT Awards" you can spot Kendi on the furthest right with her cool kid attire.
Going down memory lane she described how she came to wore that dress.
"This was from an award show it was from either 2012 or 2013 and it had something to do with changing times," she said.
Kendi explained how she was stressed about the award show knowing how broke she was, really broke.
Unlike nowadays where one can get a new outfit for every event she did not have any money to get a new fit.
"At that time I wasn't able to hit up designers to make me something for the award show, that was not an option and I did not have money."
Under such circumstances she decided to get herself a dress from gikomba that went for about 50 shillings together with a clutch bag that was 30 shillings.
At the time she had just started teaching herself how to make clothes because of these functions.
"I started of by altering thrift clothes," she continued.
She got a sewing machine handed down to her by her aunt.
The dress was about a size 16 or 18 and she definitely found out a way to alter it to fit her body.
"I had to rip out sleeve, I added shoulder pads to it, I made the neck slightly lower, I made it shorter, I made it cinched and I was able to go to an award show with an outfit that cost me 50 shillings and like two hours of my own labor "
After this she slowly learnt how to make clothes and was eventually able to make enough of them to wear to these occasions.
Kendi advised her fans not to let the internet or any award show or being invited to high tea and elite events make you go broke.
"Work with what you have, I knew I had enough creativity to figure out how to alter clothes and that is what I did and I was able to do that with 50 shillings"
