Nigerian internet fraudster, Abbas Ramoni, popularly known as Hushpuppi had his verified Instagram account of over 2M followers taken down ahead of his sentencing on the 7th of November.

Hushpuppi is known for posting photos of his lavish lifestyle on Instagram, for his former 2.3M followers to swoon over.

He is also considered by the FBI to be one of the world's most high-profile fraudsters and faces a prison sentence of up to 20 years in the US after pleading guilty to money laundering.

Court documents filed in California said Hushpuppi's crimes cost victims almost $24m (£17m) in total.

In one scheme, Hushpuppi attempted to steal more than $1.1m from someone who wanted to fund a new children's school in Qatar, the documents said.

Court records reveal that he pleaded guilty to this charge on 20 April, 2021.

The documents state that between 18 January 2019 and 9 June 2020, Hushpuppi and others targeted multiple victims and laundered the illicit funds in banks all over the world.

They add that he could face up to 20 years in prison, and will need to "pay full restitution to the victim(s)".

The fraudster was also arrested in 2020 in the United Arab Emirates in June after local police raided his Dubai apartment.

Nearly $41 million in cash, 13 luxury cars valued at around $6.8 million, and phone and computer evidence containing more than 100,000 fraud files and the addresses of nearly two million possible victims were found during the raid.

The 37-year-old began his career in Oworonshoki, a poor coastal area in the north-east of Lagos, Nigeria's commercial capital.

Locals recount that, as he grew older, he was generous with his money,  buying beers for everyone around him.

However, most people also knew from early that his money was not legit, and that he was into the cybercrime world; or as the Nigerian locals called him, "Yahoo Boy".

"Yahoo Boys" are romance scammers who took their name from the first free email available in Nigeria.
