A Mombasa-based woman left Maina Kageni in shock after sharing her 6-year experience in a toxic marriage.
The debate was based on why women keep saying 'I stayed because of the kids.
*Rukia from Mombasa said she stayed in an abusive marriage because she was scared of what people might say.
" I stayed for 5 years in a toxic marriage because we had been married in church.
He came to the maternity drunk with his 10 drunk friends but I told him he wouldn't touch my baby drunk, he almost beat me up in the ward.
The same day I left maternity he wanted to sleep with him, he said that I could wash my privates to get rid of the bleeding."
The mother of one says when she came home after delivery there was nothing for her to eat.
"He once broke my leg. He would beat me so many times and I had to pay my bills.
He would sleep with our house helped in front of me."
Rukia said that her ex-husband would threatened to kill himself.
"He would threaten to kill himself and say the death would be blamed on me.
I once ran and went back to his parent's home, he came there and beat me up in front of his parents. That is when his dad told me to go back to my parent's home.
He moved on with the house help. He would send police officers to intimidate me and I had to get a divorce and an injunction to stop him from coming close to me."
She says she was afraid of what people would say.
"Nlitoka nkiendanga and to date, he does not know what the child feeds on. He took everything and I had to start afresh with my girl.
I can never get married again. Ladies have to stop saying that they stay in toxic marriages because of their kids.
I cannot do heavy duties now because of my broken leg."
You look for a job but they need papers and I have none.
