'Comedy Riot' is a new stand-up comedy special directed by Eugene Mbugua and co-produced by the Doug Mutai's Standup Collective.
Speaking to Mpasho.co.ke Mbugua said the event will go down today, September 23, 2022 at the Louis Leakey Auditorium, terming it the future of stand-up comedy.
"'Comedy Riot' is an event to film our new TV show. It's different because we are taking it from a club to an auditorium."
"The show will be on air towards the end of this year with 13 episodes, each about 40 minutes long,"Mbugua said.
Mbugua and the team haven't settled on what to call the TV series yet, but called on comedy lovers to attend the recording.
Before the premiere of 'Comedy Riot', Mbugua had worked on 'Roast House'.
"We roasted a bunch of celebrities at Number 7. It is a collection of young and very fun guys who are taking comedy to the next level." he explained.
The filmmaker hopes to have a season two of the Roast House; "The first one was very successful, it did very well and the comedy was top-notch. That's why we have faith in stand-up comedy."
Doug Mutai said 'Comedy Riot's aim is to showcase comedy talent.
"We are going to showcase four headliners and other comics opening for the headliners. Some of these openers are funny and sometimes they are headliners, but today they are there to support who is on the line-up."
"The recording is for a streaming platform so that we showcase all these to the world. Every episode will be mostly a change of comedians. We'd love Kenyans and the rest of the world to know them more. Openers will also vary," he posed.
