Juliana Cherera booed at IEBC retreat

During a presser at Serena hotel Cherera called the results IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati presented as opaque.

• Cherara trended after she and other commissioners distanced themselves from the 2022 election results.

• She alleged that they had not been involved in the final tallying of the results.

The IEBC vice-chairperson has claimed that Mr. Chebukati did not lift a finger when employees booed her and 3 other Commissioners during retreat.

Juliana Cherera, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission vice chair is an unhappy woman.

This was after she and the other Commissioners who distanced themselves from the Election results got booed at during an IEBC retreat.

"Yes, I was booed. The other commissioners were booed too. But amidst the booing, some cheered for us. The chairman was in attendance and watched silently as some clusters of staff booed us and he did not raise a finger," lamented Cherera

A section of the commission's staff faulted Cherera, Irene Masit, Francis Wanderi, and Justus Nyang'aya, for the widening rift within the commission.

The IEBC chair noted that this caused innocent officials to be subjected to arrests and harassment by law enforcement officers.

"The most unfortunate incident was the false accusation by commissioners and fellow staff - under oath - that exposed innocent hardworking staff to arbitrary arrests and abductions, intimidation and harassment by security agencies and political goons, and other forms of obstructing election officials from conducting their duties."

The retreat was held at Mombasa Pride Inn Hotel last week.

According to sources, the fallout between Chebukati and Cherera is still evident.

So bad is the division that the two opposing factions did not share a boardroom, with each booking a different holding room.

Ms. Cherera’s group was in Witu boardroom while Mr. Chebukati’s was in the Tana room.

It is still not clear whether Cherera and the other commissioners will resign or not.
