ODM shines in Mombasa and Kakamega as Nassir & Barasa emerge victorious

Outgoing Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir has been declared the Governor-elect in Mombasa County.

Nassir who was vying for the seat on the ODM ticket floored UDA’s Hassan Omar Sarai after garnering 119,083 votes. Omar got 98, 105 votes in the gubernatorial race.  

At the county tallying center located at the Kenya School of Government (KSG) Mombasa, the results were declared by Mombasa county IEBC returning officer Swalha Yussuf.

“Asante Mombasa, humbled and truly honored! Mwanzo mpya, sauti ya watu!,’ Nassir said after the win.

On the other hand, ODM candidate, Fernandes Barasa carried the day in Kakamega County after garnering 192, 768 votes against his main competitor Cleophas Malala who got 159, 275 votes.

Malala was vying for the seat on the Amani National Congress (ANC) ticket.

"I congratulate governor elect, Hon. Fernandes Barasa and his team for their win. It is deserved and undisputable. I am ready to offer any part of my manifesto that they may find suitable in their new government for the progress of Kakamega. I also laud IEBC for conducting free, fair, credible and verifiable elections. Not all losses are losses, some are lessons,” Malala said in his congratulatory message.

The elections, both in Mombasa and Kakamega took place took place on Monday after being delayed twice by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Following Nassir and Barasa’s win celebrities from the entertainment industry and other stakeholders took their time to congratulate the two.

Nyali Member of Parliament (MP), Mohamed Ali opened the floor by saying they (UDA) respect the decision made by the people of Mombasa.

“We live to fight another day. Congratulations @asnassir . We respect the decision made by the good people of Mombasa County. Wish you all the best,” Jicho Pevu noted.

Former KTN presenter Jamal Gaddafi shared a series of posts, celebrating Nassir for carrying the day in Mombasa.

“Abuswamad Nasiri mtoto wa Nasim the second governor of Mombasa,” Jamal noted.

ODM Party leader Raila Odinga wrote; “Kakamega na Mombasa mumedhihirisha kwamba Kenya nzima ni Azimio. Hongera @BarasaFernandes na @A_S_Nassir. To our loyal supporters who came out to vote for them and Azimio as a whole on the 9th of August, I Thank You! Better days are coming,”.

Outgoing Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho added; “Congratulations my Brother @A_S_Nassir on your well-deserved win,”.
