10 things you need to know about the Bomas choir

Amidst the chaotic scenes at Bomas of Kenya, the choir kept us entertained

Even as tempers flared and fights broke out at Bomas of Kenya during the tallying of the Presidential results, a group of singers kept Kenyans entertained.

One man among them caught national attention for his exceptional dance moves as politicians and their agents accused each other of interfering in the tallying process.

The man identified as Mwindu Kariuki spoke to Citizen TV's Joyce Omondi on Sunday, August 21, where he shared details of the 'Bomas Choir'.

During the interview, Mwindu told Joyce Omondi that;

"I play in a band and am also fond of playing percussion. From time to time I take center stage and dance," he stated.

"The Holy Spirit came in droves and filled me," he added regarding his energetic moves and the excitement he generated. 

Here are things to know about the choir;

1. They stood for over ten hours straight singing. 

"We started singing at 10.00 am until almost 6.00 pm in the evening, without food or water, but we were serving our country. Our nation was shaken and music brought serenity to that house."

"The whole week, there was a lot of pressure but the music helped to calm things down. We are proud of ourselves that in the midst of it all, we were able to make the politicians stay at ease," the choir lead said.

2. The choir Director is called Kenneth Iziandi

3. The choir is made up of 22 members in total.

4. The choir also doubles up as a band.

5. The choir-cum-band was formed in 2008.

6. The choir members are in different careers ranging from teachers to civil servants, to company directors.

7. They were hired by the IEBC to perform at the auditorium with their schedule running from 10:00 am. to 3:00 pm. But due to delays in agreeing on the results, they had to sing until 6 pm, when IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati came out to address the nation.

8. Mr. Iziandi divulged that their main goal was to keep spreading the message of peace through patriotic songs. This is the reason for all the songs that we know since our childhood.

9. Their performance has earned them rave reviews and work is piling up with different people wanting them to perform at their functions as well.

10.  Mwindu Kariuki has inspired a dance challenge called the Bomas dance challenge.
