Gospel singer Mary Atieno Ominde has weighed in on the current gospel musicians.

Mary who has proved beyond reasonable doubt that disability is not inability, is among the pioneers in the industry.

Mary Atieno started her music career back in 1979.

Speaking in a recent interview with Bwenieve Digital, Mary said there is a difference between the new generation and her generation of musicians.

"The melody is different since in the past you could distinguish between a secular song and a gospel song since gospel songs had a certain pattern. nowadays is difficult to identify that," she said.

Mary added that while most of the older musicians concentrated and picked their verses from the bible, the new generation mostly deals with social issues.

"Our old songs contained messages from the bible, but this young singer we see those who are writing very good songs from the Bible but others are concentrating on social issues," she said adding that all the same God has raised all of us."

Mary songs include Hakuna Mungu Mwingine which she said is her favourite.

The singer who is also a pastor is credited for being among few artistes who have gradually redefined Kenya's gospel music scene at a time when many thought it was dead.

In a past interview, she said;

"Every time I come across my Kenyan fans, this question, What happened to Mary Atieno - the once-popular gospel singer whose songs Adamu na Eva and Sodom na Gomora, among others, dominated the gospel music scene more than two decades ago?"

Mary says it was not easy back then to succeed as a woman and as a blind person at a time when music was considered a male affair.

"I did so through God's grace and still continue to do so," she said.
