The artiste has been selling branded merchandise among them shoes, hoodies, etc.
MCSK is mandated to provide for a fair formula for sharing of revenue from ring back tunes between artists/copyright holders and telecommunication companies.
The company has however for years been castigated for paying artists peanuts while the bosses take home full pockets. MCSK Is currently being headed by Ezekiel Mutua.
Mutua, who prior to his new appointment served in the same capacity at the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB), says that based on his competence, he will usher in a new dawn to the body which deals with the affairs of musicians in the country.
Speaking during an interview with Daily Nation Mutua said he was overqualified for the job.
“Those questioning the suitability of my appointment should know that I went through a competitive process and emerged top among the candidates interviewed. I am actually overqualified for the job if the advert that was placed in the papers is anything to go by," said Mutua.
Mutua seemingly defended his credentials citing his experience at KFCB and the Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ) saying he has always transformed every organization that he has been a part of.
He stated that his plan for MCSK, which mainly battles claims of poor management of royalty collections, is to ensure Kenyan artistes actually make money – and a lot of it – from their craft.
“Watch this space; I have not failed in the past and do not think I will fail in negotiating for a way out of this matter for the sake of musicians.
We do not have to let artistes suffer because of technical legal matters in court. I believe we can engage on payment schedules with all the consumers of musical content to pay.”
Mutua stated that his aim was to make artists get their rights.
"I am here to make our artistes billionaires. I will fight for artistes the same way I fought for journalists while at the Kenya Union of Journalists.”
