Mary Abonyo, the mother of Steve Opondo has opened up on forcing her son to call her big sister.

In an interview with Lynn Ngugi, she narrated how Steve alias Mtumba guy was orphaned at a young age.

After the death of her first husband, Mary says her inlaws started mistreating her and her two children.

She recalls how they struggled to survive with children sleeping on polythene bags.

"I used to get support from my father-in-law...if he is not there you beg. The problems became too much and I escaped with the young one and went back to our home," she said.

When the situation became unbearable she fleed with her children.

She would later find another man in Homabay, who was very harsh and unwelcoming to her daughter.

"I told my mother that the man is harsh, and he won't accept my son to stay with me. So we told Steve(Mtumba guy) 'when we get there say you are my brother'."

In a past interview, Mtumba guy opened up on how the denial from his mother hurt him.

"When I started living with my mum and her new husband my sister ended up calling me uncle so that the stepdad would not find out my mum had a son. My mum would call me bro," he said.
