Gospel singer Shiro Wa GP's mum sold chang'aa to feed them

Gospel singer Shiro Wa GP has narrated her grass to grace story.

In a recent interview with Kameme FM, Wa GP said she was raised in Kiambu by her mum.

"My mum sold chang'aa, and her biggest distributor was my dad, though he was not present in our lives," she said.

Wa GP said due to the illegal business, her mum on several occasions spent years in jail.

"She made money out of that until one day she was arrested and jailed for three years in Langata prison. Problems began from there since my dad was married to four wives and so he could not take care of us."

She said during the time her mum was jailed, she felt rejected as most of her schoolmates knew why she was not with them.

"I performed well despite and went to different high schools since after my mum was released, we kept on moving. She would move from one place to the other selling the illicit brew."

She lauded her mum saying despite all the struggles, there was no day she ever abandoned her kids.

On how she got saved, Wa GP said;

"I never tried drinking. She was very strict. I was used to listening to secular music until after form four when I started going to church.

I was a house girl in a pastor's house. One day, my employer told me to come for her fellowship. I remember telling her that my mum would be mad at me if I get saved."

Months later, her mum accompanied her to a Kesha and saw her passion for singing.

"She stood at the door after she heard my name being mentioned in the church. I had a passion for music. She saw me leading the praise and worship in song.

She was so touched and on that day, she knelt down and got saved. The problem was that she had a huge stock of Chang'aa.

She wanted to finish her stock first even after she got saved but the pastor told her she would give her money to feed us so she had to pour the Chang'aa.

That is how my mum and I started leading a holy life."

Apart from the house help job, Wa GP also sold groceries and water to make a living.

"I used to hustle by fetching water for construction sites. I later started working in a church.

I started earning from the church by cleaning it. I was also given a place to sell groceries near the church."
