Former Citizen TV news anchor Janet Mbugua has joined efforts by Nairobi County officials to push for the Sexual and Gender Based Violence Management and Control Bill.

On Monday, she met Nairobi Deputy Governor Anne Kananu, Woman Representative Esther Passaris in the push for the laws to protect GBV victims.

Through the Sexual and Gender Based Violence Management and Control Bill 2019 they are advocating for the  setting up of Safe Houses for victims across the county.

On her social media, Janet Mbugua shared some of the factors that are derailing the fight against GBV.

"The constant ‘what about us’ question. News flash: we know that everyone is affected by GBV. The reality, sadly, is that women and children are most affected.

Furthermore, men are the ones reported to commit the crimes the most. That said; there are so many more male allies who are pushing to protect their communities against GBV and report perpetrators," Janet Mbugua wrote.

Janet Mbugua also advocates for justice for victims, putting a stop to the release of perpetrators without following legal procedures.

"Protecting perpetrators- Whether it’s files getting conveniently ‘lost’ in court or perpetrators being released unannounced, there’s too many communities sending the message to victims that ‘your life isn’t that important’. Make it stop."
