"I went to the US by bus. It took me 9 months," Billionaire SK Macharia

SK Macharia is one of the most popular businessmen in Kenya. The media mogul is the head of Royal Media Services that owns Citizen TV and Radio.

Macharia hasn't always been a wealthy man. He is one of those men who literally "pulled themselves up by the bootstraps."

This week, Mr. Macharia opened up on how hard it was for him when he was coming up, explaining that he first travelled to the US by bus with only KSh 1200 pocket money.

"I went to the US by bus. It took me nine months, with KSh 1,200, and left my father and three sisters without a piece of land in the village," he remembered.

The 78-year-old added that he once worked as a sweeper at Boeing.⁣ But now SK is so wealthy so much so that he was recently embroiled in an inheritance battle with his own grandson!

Mr. Macharia was a party to a Ksh1.2 billion property case with his grandson over the administration of his late son, John Gichia's, estate.

According to the lawsuit papers, the properties in contention were valued at more than Sh1.2 billion and were under Macharia's administration.

His grandson, Adam Kamau Macharia, had moved to court in May of last year seeking to stop his administrator grandfather from evicting him from their Loresho home.

Last month, Mr. Macharia temporarily lost control of the estate with High Court judge Stella Mutuku revoking letters granted to the media mogul in 2019 allowing him to administer the estate of his late son.
