Jada Pinkett Smith producing Netflix series by Kenyan writer, Peres Owino

Jada Pinkett Smith will be executive-producing a Netflix series called African Queens which will be written by Kenyan Peres Owino and NneNne Iwuji (Yellow).

According to IMDB, Peres is a writer and actress, known for Glimpse (2019), Bound: Africans versus African Americans (2014) and Grimsby (2016). She was previously married to Michael Murphy.

The mooted series has been given a two-season order will follow a different queen each season — starting with Cleopatra in Season 1 and Njinga in Season 2.

The series will blend expert interviews and other documentary content with premium scripted docudrama/re-enactments.

“As the mother of a young Black woman, it is immensely important to me that she learns the lessons of the African Queens who paved the way for our success and the success of generations of Black women,” said Pinkett Smith. “I am very passionate and excited about bringing the stories and lessons of these powerful women to light in order to showcase their strength, leadership, and undeniable influence on history.”

Season 2 will follow Njinga, the 17th-century warrior queen of Matamba and Ndongo, in modern day Angola, who was the nation’s first female ruler.
