Why You Should Not Let Supermarkets Give You Sweets For Change

Supermarkets in the country have for a long time been accused of giving customers sweets, matchboxes and airtime in the pretext of lack of coins. However, this is not exactly the case. They are minting millions of cash gotten from forced daily sales.

To curb the menace, the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK). The financial regulatory institution issued a statement saying that “there is adequate stock of coins and Central Bank has issued sufficient quantities of the Kenyan currency coins.”

The bank says that all monetary transactions in Kenya should be done in the same currency unless the customer approves commodity in exchange.

According to a statement from CBK “The law requires that all monetary obligations entered into or made in Kenya be settled in Kenya currency unless otherwise provided for by law or agreed upon by the parties involved,”. CBK also urged banks to ensure efficient flow of coins so as to minimize such cases.
