Vlogger Joan Munyi, popularly known as Yummy mummy, has shared about her sister's  struggle with addiction to marijuana and heroin.

On her YouTube channel, she said,

MY SISTER AND FATHER STURGGLED WITH ADDICTION SO IT'S A TOPIC THAT IS CLOSE TO ME

This prompted her mother to run a rehab centre - Teen Challenge Rehabilitation Center - located along Kiambu Rd. Munyi's mother said her husband's addiction had strong repercussions on her children and pushed her to seek help because her child began to get hooked on marijuana.

my husband struggled with addiction for many years.it had a strong influence especially on my third born daughter who was addicted to marijuana.

The rehab director noted that lack of a gender specific rehab center for women made her open a centre where her daughter could be enrolled. She said,

women have more needs, they need more care because addiction hits women more than it does men.

She added:

for  many years i wondered how could i help her because no simple talk, beating or any form of discipline seemed to help.

She maintained that addiction is not a life long sentence. She said,

once an addict, you are always not an addict. 83% of those who go through the programme will never go back to the drugs they were addicted to

Some life events that lead people to addiction include a difficult childhood, trauma, brokenness, loss of a loved one, bankruptcy and rejection. Addiction is not a disease. Munyi's mother said,

it starts as a choice and becomes a habit that leads to that addiction. we've seen people who have been addicts for almost 20 years but eventually come free

Dora, Munyi's sister who battled with addiction, said it started as a joke, but later escalated.

it was a downward spiral which started from drinking  and i later went to experimenting with cigarettes.i got to point where i realized alcohol doesn't do it for me and that is when i opted for Marijuana and heroin

Dora said:

getting weed was not a problem, alcohol too wasn't because my boyfriend would get them for me

Dora added that anyone who is struggling with addition can break the addiction.

when the desire of the future is at the peak that is when you will start to change because the future is not worth being in jeopardy.
