Science has proved it: You ought to dress well so that your self-esteem doesn't deep. In a 2012 study on the implication of dress code on self-esteem done by Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, the conclusive evidence shows that what you wear influences your psychological processes. Doctors who wear lab coats tend to be more attentive to detail as compared to those who don't. So how exactly does this happen?

The symbolic meaning of the clothing that you wear have some sort of 'altering' effect on how you behave and what you do; it's like how a teacher monitors what a student does and directly influences the results of the task being done. Adolescent girls appear to be more self-conscious and and concerned with their looks because they feel that their peers readily accept them if they dress cool. So, dressing essentially makes a statement about you, creates a sense of belonging and boosts sexual appeal to the opposite sex.

Here are 7 tips of dressing and being comfortable in yourself:

  1. Only wear what suits you: Don't do buggy if you're skinny – or do tight is you're big. That's the universal rule. Or don't do this type of color on a certain occasion. I would really concur with the latter since it is more on the kind of impression you pose. If your physique makes you fit for any clothe then go for it.
  2. You're the one who knows what's the best for you: Don't go with the crowd. Don't mess up by trying the latest trend yet you very well know that you're not really fit for it. So just chill out with embracing the bandwagon and just do you; what works for you is what makes you stand out.
  3. The tag may fool you: Many go to the shop and collect an outfit that corresponds to the size they've been wearing the entire year. Shock comes when trying the scented apparel when they get home; it doesn't fit and for the fear of being ashamed returning to the shop, they choose to wear it anyway. This immensely brings down your moods when going out with friends or for an interview.
  4. Don't overdress: If you put on too much fur then you've dropped it; just keep it modest. Your instincts will definitely tell you when you've done it – or you can always learn from experts i.e. bloggers, established stylists or your cool friends. I know some of the best but that's a story for another day.
  5. Don't underdress: This is especially a no-no at work. Don't do that. Either you'll come across cheap or make people think the worst of you, get me? This is a self-explanatory scenario. Modesty.
  6. Shoes matter: This matters the most. People first notice the kind of shoes you're wearing. Take your time to shop for the best shoes you can get – they don't have to be designer as long as they look good. As Wizkid puts it, make them look clean.
