Tension At JKUAT As Police Arrive To Quell Riots

Tension engulfed JKUAT for the second day running following social media warning that the varsity students were planning to stage another riot and do massive property damage.

Anticipating trouble Police in full riot gear are still camped outside the campus with large number in civilian inside the college.

The students were readmitted (first years and final years) on Monday 10 th after they were sent home on Friday 31 st October after they rioted for testing the increment of their fees. All the students were readmitted on condition they paid their fee in full and an extra kshs 5,200 each for the damages they caused during the October 30 and 31.

A student leader who spoke on condition of anonymity demanded that the board of senate explain how they arrived at the kshs 5,200 which was being charged from each student. They said the damage fee was totaling kshs 50 million for all the 10,000 plus students who were in session.

The student claimed that damage caused by the students was of kshs 1million. He said only a few window panes in the Engineering Department halls of residence and torched old school vehicle. He said the damage also included a pulled down perimeter wall section.

“We are wondering why the university is fundraising from us by making a mountain out of a mole hill,” the furious leader stated.

An attempt to get a Comment from the College Communications Director Dr Mike Ngonyo was fruitless as his phone went unanswered.

Thika West Deputy County Commissioner Jeremiah Gicheru said that security in the Institution has been beefed up. He said police were not taking any chance.

“We are not going to allow the student take the law into their own hands by engaging in lawlessness. The students should talk to the senate through their leaders,” said the commissioner.

The student’s have been using their tweets and face book pages threaten staging riot and causing damage if their grievances are not met.
