A man who went swimming with his girlfriend in the Indian Ocean during Moi Day yesterday died after he was swept off by strong waves at Vidazini area within Kilifi creek.

Eyewitnesses, among them fishermen, said they spotted the couple at around 4.30 pm in the evening but a moment later they heard the lady screaming for help.

Sharif Dzombo who was fishing nearby raised an alarm to call his colleagues who were fishing across the creek and teamed up to save the 32-year-old man whose name could not be known immediately.

They managed to rescue and rushed him to Kilifi level 4 hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

“We did our best to rescue him in good time. There was however no immediate transport to rush him to the hospital,” Dzombo said.

Kilifi north deputy police commander Patrick Njoroge who confirmed the incident appealed to those going to the sea to swim to be cautious of the strong winds currently being experienced in the area.
