Cyprian Nyakundi is in the news again. Why? He has been arrested following allegations that he abused Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on social media. The tweets are below:
According to a police source, the suspect has been denied police bond and will face a series of charges. A police source that is privy ot the case said:
“Several people have been summoned to write statements over the same.”
Tweeting from the police cell, Nyakundi said the Directorate of Criminal Investigations brought four cases against him. He said Sonko, Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru, NCIC, and Kenya Power MD Ken Tarus are the complainants.
Who exactly is this man, Cyprian and why does it seem that trouble and jail cell seem to be like his bed-fellows? Cyprian Nyakundi was born in 1991. He is a controversial Kenyan blogger who has an interest in politics, governance, corporate- fraud and human-interest stories.
His social media activism that would propel him to national prominence started early on in his college days. Even there, he was a force to be reckoned with causing the university to expel him in 2012.
The reason was because Meru University of Science and Technology felt that he was “Tarnishing the Image of the University” via social media.
According to the News24, Nyakundi told Itumbi he had complained about the condition of the road to Nchiru town and unavailability and inadequate stocking of books at the library among others.
That would not be the end of the furors that he would cause. He did so when he started a fire against former Safaricom CEO Michael Joseph and current CEO.Through their lawyers, Muriu, Mungai and Co Advocates, the two placed an advert in the dailies informing the blogger of the suit suing him.
The two CEO’s had a bone to pick with the man after he had written three articles that had the titles: ‘How Safaricom steals from Kenyans with third parties’, ‘Your privacy and Safaricom are two different things’ and ‘Time to put Safaricom back in its box before it seriously hurts Kenyans’.
However, responding to the suit, Nyakundi said he is unmoved because he is sure the truth will eventually come out.
In March 2017 Cyprian Nyakundi was fined Sh300,000 for contempt in the Safaricom case. He was found in contempt for repeatedly defaming Safaricom boss Bob Collymore via social media. He was asked to pay a Sh300,000 fine or spend four months in jail for contempt of court.
High Court judge Lucy Mwihaki also said that the blogger has defied an order to appear for mitigation and did not give a justifiable reason.
Last year, he then went up against many feminists like Adelle, Betty Kyallo and Lilian Muli. His biggest firestorm was when he hypothesized that Adelle was too ugly to get raped. This made many get exasperated with him.
But he still did not stop as he went on to become the “Boy Child” president. He did so with a series of posts on social media educating/shaming sponsors, stupid men and slay queens.
It seems that Cyprian will not stop poking and prodding the masses and the elite as he has maintained:
“Laws criminalizing blogging were declared unconstitutional. What is happening to me is totally unacceptable.”
What I am sure about is that this will not be the last time we will him embroiled in something messy.
