A high school teacher has been arrested in Busia after he allegedly stabbed and killed his 96-year-old grandmother.
The 25-year-old man reportedly attacked his grandmother with a knife while she was in the kitchen.
The incident happened at Kisoko in Nambale sub-county.
Nambale sub-county police commander George Ongosi confirmed the incident.
He said the suspect had been arrested, booked, and detained at Busia police station.
A relative said the teacher has been undertaking treatment at a mental hospital in Kakamega.
The relative also said the teacher had delayed travelling to Kakamega for a routine check-up by a week.
After stabbing the grandmother, he is said to have locked the kitchen door to limit access.
A neighbour said the teacher opened the door after they threatened to break the door.
Relatives and neighbours caught the man and tied him to a tree trunk before alerting police officers from the Nambale police station who arrested him.
"After killing the grandmother, he threatened to stab another relative before he was caught and tied to the tree trunk," another neighbour said.
The body of the deceased was moved to the Busia County Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.
