An Eldoret woman who killed her two children to please her new husband has been sentenced to 17 years in prison.
34-year-old Flossy Cherono was charged in an Eldoret court for allegedly killing her two children to persuade her new boyfriend to marry her.
He killed his children Ivy Chelagat aged 11 and Beryl Chepchumba aged seven with a machete. While in front of Judge Reuben Nyakundi, Ms. Cherono admitted to throwing the bodies of the two in the pit toilet.
The court heard that the accused killed the children on the night of July 9, 2019 at their home in Kaburwo, Nandi county.
The prosecution told the court that the incident was horrific and the accused deserved severe punishment for ending the lives of innocent girls, a local newspaper reported.
Judge Nyakundi also said he was surprised by the confession of the mother who told the court that she killed innocent children to protect her marriage.
An autopsy report from the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) confirmed that the children had been strangled to death before being cut into pieces with machetes.
"The children had been strangled to death while the other had bled to death from a severe head injury," said the autopsy report. Ms. Cherono has 14 days to appeal against the sentence.
