A security detail attached to Mama Ida Odinga was last night shot dead in Kisumu’s Uzima area.
The police officer, whose identity can't be disclosed until his family is informed about the tragic death, was in the company of a woman said to be his lover.
Nyanza regional police boss Karanja Muiruri confirmed the incident but promised to provide further details after receiving the full report.
The assailant who is said to be a manager of one of the clubs in Kisumu took off after the shooting.
The suspect also shot the woman in the arm. Another man who was with the duo was also shot in the leg.
The suspect is said to have escaped with the slain officer's firearm.
