Today night, activist Boniface Mwangi shared a very sad story on his Twitter timeline. Boniface highlighted a story about a teenage girl who had been raped by a man pretending to be a man of the cloth.
That wasn't all, the 'cleric' apparently went on to gauge the eyes of the girl so she couldn't be able to identify him were she to report him.
"A man pretending to be a pastor raped a 17-year-old girl after giving her a lift. He later blinded her by gouging out her eyes to ensure he can’t be identified. That evil man qualifies for public office in Kenya, don’t we happily elect such criminals?"
Most people who read the story were horrified at the account and said as much in the comments section.
Rape is the most highly underreported crime in Kenya. It is estimated that only 1 out of 20 women in Kenya will report a rape and only 1 in 6 will seek medical assistance. Relying on reported cases will therefore not provide a genuine picture of what is truly happening on the ground.
Let us all hope that the man responsible for this heinous crime is caught and prosecuted fully for his crime.
