Former Education assistant minister Ayiecho Olweny has alleged foul play in the death of a police inspector who died under mysterious circumstances.

Olweny said Victor Otieno could have been poisoned by a toxic substance in Isiolo where he was based.

He died in Nairobi. Olweny said the doctors at the Nairobi West Hospital where Otieno was taken before lapsing into a coma found toxic substances in his blood.

The former Muhoroni MP dismissed claims Otieno died from stress related to family issues. “We want a thorough probe into the death of the late inspector of police,” Olweny said.

The Kisumu county ODM party chairman is eying the Kisumu Senate seat and will face nominated Senator Rose Nyamunga, senior counsel Tom Ojienda and youthful aspirant Philip Pande in the next year’s general election.

Olweny said that the toxic substances led to swelling of Otieno’s brain before he died while still in a coma. He spoke during the  Otieno's burial on Friday in Muhoroni.

He claimed that the police ceremonial outfit belonging to Otieno was missing and asked under what circumstances some of his personal belongings found their way to his home.

“It was heard that Otieno collapsed while on duty in Isiolo before being moved to Nairobi,” Olweny said.

A representative from the National Police Service had claimed that Otieno died as a result of depression related to home issues, which Olweny discounted.

He was described as a hard-working officer who was also very humble. Olweny praised the government for covering the Sh6.4 million hospital bill.
