Police are investigating an incident in which a headteacher of a primary school in Kisii County was last night killed in an arson over a land issue.

The bodies of the headteacher of Gekongo Primary and her husband were found in their house at Itumbe shopping centre after an apparent arson attack.

Police say the two have been having a land tussle with some locals and believe this led to the fatal attack. No arrest has been made so far but investigators are on the site.

Land issues are explosive in the region.

Meanwhile, at least six armed men believed to be bandits were shot dead in Kerio Valley after they crossed from Tiaty sub-county as the fight against banditry intensify.

Officials laid an ambush on the bandits said to have been planning a raid leading to the shooting. Police said they have intensified operations in the area in an effort to tame the emerging threat of banditry.

Insecurity has prompted people to flee their homes fearing for their lives. The killing of the six brought to over 20, the number of people killed in the banditry prone Kerio Valley in the past one month between the warring Marakwet and Pokot communities.
