Luhya culture can seem peculiar to casual observers. At funerals, there seems to be some level of festivities. My mother once explained to me that it stems from the desire our ancestors had to celebrate the departed's life.

But be that as it may, there are still many instances of heart breaking grief as the departed's beloved are hit with the realization of the finality that is death. This usually happens at different points for different people. For some it is when they first encounter their loved one's remains. For others, when the casket gets interred into the earth.
