Being in an abusive relationship is emotionally draining, but having the courage to talk about it and walk away is something not many people can do.

Sadly domestic violence does not mind class, tribe, or age. It affects anyone.

Below are different celebrities who have been victims of domestic violence.

Saumu Mbuvi

Saumu who is the daughter of Nairobi Mike Sonko has been a victim of an abusive relationship not once but twice.

This is despite being in her 20’s.

Talking about her experience, she had in the past said that the abuse from her then baby daddy Benson Gatu left her damaged.

In a past social media post she penned

'Let me use myself as an example, my first relationship I was only 21 young and naïve, thinking the relationship would lead to marriage.

It damaged me and left me on depression pills for a while, the same fear of being judged is what I had until I choose myself and my child’s happiness over everything.

Most women should know that if their kids see you physically abused all the time, all they will know is violence, which will damage them psychologically.

My second relationship at 23, at least with a bit of experience, anything that involved violence, was a no for me. I was stronger and didn’t care how many would criticize me, my health and happiness come first and that of my daughter,” shared Saumu Mbuvi.

In 2020 Saumu was dating Lamu senator Anwar.

The relationship looked all rosy but recently Saumu left many in shock after alleging that the senator was physically abusive.

“HE WOULD COME HOME DRUNK AND START to STRANGLE ME TELLING ME THAT HE IS GOING TO KILL ME ONE DAY.

IMAGINE! FOR WHAT? THERE’S A TIME HE SAID HE WAS GOING TO KILL ME. MY DAD TOOK ANWAR AS A TRUE FRIEND BUT ANWAR BETRAYED HIM BUT I HAVE BEAUTIFUL KIDS TO FOCUS ON."

Tiwa Savage

Nigerian songstress Tiwa Savage has also been a victim of domestic violence by her former husband Tee Billz.

Savage was having domestic issues that also included physical and emotional abuse barely two years after her marriage to her husband tee Billz.

She also revealed to the shock of many people that her husband had been beating her before their marriage as well. Tiwa managed to walk out of her marriage and is now doing well.

Ida Alisha

Idah Alisha, popularly known as Olive, the former Mother-in-law actress has opened up on her experience with abusive relationships.

She got married thinking she had found her prince charming only to realize she had been duped.

Through her YouTube channel, Idah shared how her ex-husband would beat her up even n front of her friends.

HE WAS GREAT. THE FIRST YEAR WAS FANTASTIC AND HE STARTED BECOMING ABUSIVE. THE FIRST TIME HE SLAPPED ME I WAS LIKE IT MUST BE THIS MOUTH (SHE SAID WHILE POINTING AT HER MOUTH).

I MUST HAVE SAID SOMETHING RECKLESS THAT MADE HIM ANGRY AND WE MAKE EXCUSES LIKE HE DOESN’T ACT LIKE THAT. HE SAID SORRY AND WE MOVED ON.

I NEVER TOLD ANYONE ESPECIALLY BECAUSE MY LIFE WAS IN THE LIMELIGHT.'

Idah added

HE STRIPPED ME OF MY CONFIDENCE SLOWLY BY SLOWLY.

I WOULD WEAR A DRESS AND HE WOULD BE LIKE ‘WHERE ARE YOU GOING DRESSED LIKE THAT?’ HE THEN WOULD SAY ‘SO YOU JUST GONNA SHOW YOUR KNEES LIKE THAT?’ IDAH SAID.

The man did not change. One day he became violent in the presence of her friends and it’s at that point when they believed her when said the man was abusive.

THERE WAS A TIME MY FRIENDS HAD COME OVER TO MY HOUSE AND I TOLD HIM WE WERE GOING OUT AND WOULD BE BACK EARLY.

MY PALS WERE SPENDING THE NIGHT OVER AT OUR PLACE AND IT ENDED UP BEING VIOLENT. HE DRAGGED ME IN FRONT OF MY FRIENDS AND WAS TRYING TO THROW ME AROUND AND THEY WITNESSED THIS.'

Things changed for the worst and Idah said,

She continued, "THERE WAS A SCENARIO THAT HAPPENED IN MY LIFE. I REMEMBER THERE WAS A TIME HE WAS STANDING OVER ME IN THE SAME POSITION MY DAD STOOD OVER MY MUM. THAT’S WHEN I TOLD MYSELF ‘THIS MAN IS GONNA KILL ME ONE DAY AND THAT’S WHEN I LEFT."

She narrated how she prepared herself for work that morning, dressed up and took her handbag never to return.

I WALKED OUT LIKE I WAS GOING TO WORK AND NEVER CAME BACK.

Janet Wanja

Janet Wanja, famously known for her Volleyball prowess was also in abusive relationship.

The man she was dating at the time was insecure because of her success something that made him justify his ‘anger’ by beating her up.

In a past interview with the Nairobian Wanja talked of how she was once beaten for hours.

'I met him right after school. We dated for four years and he made me believe that I could not live without him.

As I scaled greater heights in my volleyball career, he increasingly became insecure. Simple arguments turned into physical confrontations, which always ended with me bleeding. I often sought refuge at my parent's place.'

Adding

'There is a day I visited my brother Kim because we hadn’t seen each other for a while. When my boyfriend called me, I told him I was at Kim’s, but doubted the story and asked to talk to him. I gave him the phone and they talked.

When I got home, he beat me from 7 pm till 3 am. Then he broke a glass on the floor, undressed me, and dragged me on the shards.

I will never forget that day. I prayed and told God that, ‘if you save me from this house and I still come back to this man, he may he kill me,’” she said.

Luckily for Wanja, she has since moved on.
