Caroline Mutoko is one of the pioneers in the radio industry in Kenya. The savvy media personality has blazed a trail for many in the industry with techniques and strategies that are still used today.
Mutoko is averse to sharing intimate details about her private life, especially that which concerns her home and hearth. She explained why on her YouTube channel:
For some people, it’s a non-negotiable (sharing their personal life on social media), I am one of those people. It is not up for discussion and for me if you ask anyone who works in media like Caroline Mandi of True Love, she will tell you that I am very clear, my home is off limits. My home is not available and my circle of friends have the sort of lives and jobs that can’t afford nonsense and actually sometimes we both need plausible deniability to each other.
Mutoko said that her experiences with social media have made her cautious about what she shares. She said:
So I don’t share that. I feel that sharing that leaves me very little in terms of places I could retreat to a cocoon or cave of love and understanding and just us-ness that has nothing to do with the rest of you. So yes there are some people who will say no and I am one of them. And even when I have said yes before, I have watched the monster that can be social media and I have to choose very carefully what can be put out there, how much and in what manner.
Caroline was reacting to a video by fashion enthusiast and TV presenter Sharon Mundia (This is Ess) who put out a video raising concerns about how entitled some of her followers were after they demanded to be shown the intimate details of her daughter’s first birthday. Mundia went on to say her daughter’s life is out of bounds, even though she has previously shared side shots of her baby though not her face.
Caroline and Mundia are not alone in keeping her private life away from the glare of the public. Wyre, a veteran musician, also keeps his family life private.
Hardly a photo of his wife exists in the public sphere apart from a wedding picture. Talk about protecting your privacy.
