He is celebrating one-year ever since he made the decision and in a lengthy message he shared, he says he doesn't regret,

"On a night like this last year, I met up with some friends along Ngong Road. I asked for two cold beers and we had about three or four rounds of shots. As I took my second beer, I told myself that this was the last alcohol content that would get into my body. I didn't even finish that bottle. And that was my start to my alcohol-free life," he wrote in part.

One year later, I am thankful for the strength to not relapse drawn the encouragement of both friends and strangers. My first circle of friends - my family - has been the most supportive.

I have also been encouraged by the number of online strangers who have taken a similar journey since I first shared why I had to quit. Always remember what I say when we have exchanged notes - IT'S YOUR JOURNEY AND YOU'RE DOING IT FOR YOU.

Mathenge, who lost everything including family, friends advised those who love alcohol to be careful because it takes control of one's life.

As I get to year two, let me make a quick note that alcohol is not bad. But when it takes control of your life like it had done mine, then you have to sit back and have a conversation with your inner self.

Always do what is best for you, those you love and those that look up to you.

It is never easy but it can be done. We can never be perfect but we can be better than our past.

Personally, I had fallen, lost to focus, broken important relationships, was deep in debt and my health was failing.

Over the last one year, I have worked on my relationships, fo used better at work, cleared my debts more than half way and I have not fallen sick as much and my mental health is on track.

I did this all for me - to be a better person and the journey continues.
