Eldoret Express bus accident

Thirteen people were killed in a tragic road accident in Kisumu county late last night.

A total of 38 casualties were rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.

The accident occurred when the Kisumu-Nairobi bound bus collided with a trailer at Pala near Awasi at 11 pm.

Both the drivers died. The Eldoret express bus driver was trying to overtake a tractor.

Eldoret Express bus accidentTwo survivors from the Eldoret Express bus accident attributed the crash to over speeding.

Dackton Otieno narrated, “When we got to Awasi, the road was clear, so the driver increased his speed. We did not go more than 10 minutes before the bus started to swerve violently for few seconds then it hit something. the next thing I knew was that everyone was down.”

Eldoret Express bus accidentHe added, “The driver was overspeeding so he couldn’t step on the emergency brakes. He tried but the car overpowered his attempt.”

“I because unconscious and only came to, to find myself under the car with luggage covering me. People were crying begging to be helped from the wreckage. The biggest problem we had was that there were no emergency services from 11 pm when the accident happened to around 12:45 am.”

An inconsolable passenger who watched as her child died spoke through her tears.

Awasi accidentCaroline Kalekye Odhiambo said, “I was going to my sister’s ceremony in Machakos. When we got to Awasi. I was jolted brutally by the impact of the accident. When I came to, I found one of my chid was lying unconscious under the weight of heavy metal.

“I started screaming for help, I couldn’t move the metal or free myself either, I tore my clothes to free myself. That is when I left the wreckage and went to get help. Only one child survived.”
