Ann Mitu is a woman with a phenomenal story. She's a mother of one and runs a women's movement, targeting young mothers who are struggling to raise their kids on their own. It all came about when a life-changing happening struck her as a teenager. She has since learned to take care of her family by upholding her talent and working hard to support her family after her husband passed away two years ago.

She's since gotten herself a recurrent role in Shujaaz, a program which highlights the lives of young people in the streets especially the slums. It brings out some of the problems that they face – from unemployment to HIV/AIDs. It basically aims to improve the lives of young people across East Africa by providing them with holistic, practical knowledge. The messages are mainly communicated in the Sheng language – which youth easily identify with.

The program, is syndicated across various media, including a free comic book that is circulated around the country on a monthly basis, radio shows and the TV show on which Ann appears. Shujaaz has won two Emmy Awards; the 2012 & 2014 International Digital Emmy Award for Children & Young People. That's a huge achievement.

Apart form TV, Ann also works with fashion houses. For instance, she's worked with alongside Connie Aluoch. I talked to Ann about her role in the series, her life and dreams and here's what she had to say:

Me: So tell me; when did you start acting and why did you chose to?

Ann: I started acting back in 2012 as an extra. I have been acting ever since I was in school.

my passion for acting/production is extreme.

Me: That's nice...is Shujaaz your first role?

Ann: Yeah, Shujaaz is the first project I have done that's big to me in terms of acting but production-wise it''s not my first. In Shujaaz I am cast and crew. I also do script supervising/continuity.

Me: Wow...I actually love your role and how you do it...it's stellar and natural. What kinda roles would you do in a movie?

Ann: Mmmh I wouldn't want to be type cast because  it wouldn't be good for my career. But i would like where am being mistreated and get raped – more of a slave.

Me: Wow...why such a role? Why not a model or company executive?

Ann: I believe by doing such a role I will represent so many people who have gone through a similar situation. I have two things dear to my heart – acting/production and my movement Young mothers Africa.

Me: Amazing...whats your movement about?

Ann: Creating awareness  about pertaining to early pregnancy, how to curb it and the life after.

Me: Who mentored you? In acting...and who do you look up to? And how did the foundation come about?

Ann: My mentor is called Daniel Duwa....I got a baby at an earlier age  and so that experience made me start the movement. I would love to work with Brad Pitt as a producer /director.

Me: Any support you need with your movement?

Ann: Yeah, maybe if I could get people who we think alike and a partner to work with.

Me: So what are your biggest achievements so far?

Ann: Getting a role as Shiro in Jongo love, doing continuity in  three different productions and starting my movement being able to reach to young mothers.

Watch out for Ann Mitu in the next season of Shujaaz, every Thursday on NTV.
