Media personality Gladys Gachanja has been battling with an incurable disease since her childhood.

The NTV news anchor opened up about the disease in her social media.

Taking to her Instagram page, Gladys talked about her condition that her son has also inherited from her.

"I have lived with Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema) all my life and my son was born with it. Though I have outgrown its major effects, my son is still on that journey and some seasons can be more difficult than others.

She added,

"In this condition, the physical effects are very obvious but the emotional impact, not so obvious yet this is a reality of those who live with Atopic Eczema."

Gladys was disclosing this information after a recent TV episode of the Health Diary series in which Dorothy Muchere, recounted her experiences of living with the disease.

"Listening to Dorothy Muchere, an Eczema Warrior, share her struggle with this chronic condition on NTV affirms there are many living with this condition."

Although symptoms and signs of the disease may vary from person to person, the most common symptoms are dry, itchy, red skin.

  • Itch is the hallmark of the disease.
  • Typically, affected skin areas include the folds of the arms, the back of the knees, wrists, face, and neck.
  • The itchiness is an important factor in atopic dermatitis because scratching and rubbing can worsen the skin inflammation that is characteristic of this disease.
  • People with atopic dermatitis seem to be more sensitive to itching and feel the need to scratch longer in response.
  • They develop what is referred to as the "itch-scratch" cycle.
  • The extreme itchiness of the skin causes the person to scratch, which in turn worsens the itch, and so on. Itching is particularly a problem during sleep when conscious control of scratching decreases and the absence of other outside stimuli makes the itchiness more noticeable.
