A prison warden was shot dead accidentally by his colleague at Hola prison in Tana River County yesterday morning.

Confirming the incident to the press, Tana River County Police Commander Fredrick Ochieng said the incident took place at about 7.00am whereby the victim was shot in the belly as the officer was performing safety precautions to his firearm when it accidentally discharged one bullet severely injuring his colleague.

Speaking to the press on the telephone, the Police Commander said the victim was rushed to Hola referral hospital but was referred to Malindi Sub County Hospital in Kilifi County where he died on arrival.

He said the body is lying at Malindi Sub County hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.

The Police Commander added that during the incident, other prison officers upon hearing the gun shot rushed in to find out what had happened only to find their colleague in a pool of blood.

Ochieng said the case was under investigations though there was no known conflict between the two to trigger such an action.
