Last Sunday, I got to host BET 2015 Award nominee Nigerian singer Yemi Alade for an interview with Mpasho News. She was visibly happy being in Kenya; she has been her a couple times before, did a media tour and has since been a household name.

Her hit song “Johnny” propelled her to fame such that she is now one of the best female artistes in Africa.

Yemi was dressed in classic jeans, donned on a black top, some cool glasses and a maasai themed lesso. It was a rather chilly morning in the capital. After her on air session with Kiss FM's Adelle, I got to have a sit down with her. It was a humbling moment since I got a hold of her while she is still hot!

Recently, she has released a hit song dubbed “Na Gode “ with singer Selebobo. Yemi tells me that it is a song that is meant to thank God for the things he has offered to us; life, food, water...just the basic needs we need to survive. There are many people out there who would want the same but they cannot.

It is a really good song. Yemi never ceases to impress. That is why she won at the MTV MAMAs in Durban, South Africa, alongside the likes of P-Square, comedian Trevor Noah, fellow singer Davido and American rapper Nicki Minaj.

Apart from music, she has also been part of a big project with One Campaign. She worked on a women empowerment song called “Strong Girl,” alongside top African female musicians including Waje, Vanessa Mdee, to raise awareness for the campaign.

The campaign seeks to bring people from all walks of life to nurture female talent, support the girl child since educating a girl child translates into educating a generation.

These are some of the valuable lessons I learned from once-in-a-lifetime interaction with Yemi.

1. Stay humble

She said that when she collaborated with Kenya's Jua Cali on the set of Coke Studio, she felt humbled and it was a rare opportunity for her to learn from a musician who had been in the music game for 15 years. Yemi comes across as a truly humble lady; someone who despite her fame has kept her priorities right to date.

2. There is an opportunity to learn from everyone

Yemi said that she learned how to make slow tempo music when working with Jua Cali. This is opposed to the fast-beat music genre that defines her style. Her Afrobeat sense is full of dance and fast choreography. She is now ready to work on music which appeals to a certain audience.

3. Winning an award is not the end of everything

Yemi Alade won at the MTV MAMAs awards but is still working harder for her next musical project. She is anticiptating winning more awards in the immediate future. She has been working on new music all through. Her latest song is just one of her latest projects.

4. You definitely need support to be the best you can be

Yemi Alade had her fans vote for her when she was nominated for the BET award. She also has had a large online audience supporting her music. From concert fees to award nominations and voting, Yemi credits her fans for being the impetus behind the success.

5. You do not always have to respond to everything

I asked her about her current relationship, to which she insisted on not answering. She cited the reason being that my question was invalid as far as she was concerned. She did not have to answer it since it does not build her in any way. It works well for her brand too; she is concentrating on the most important things in life.
