5 Things You Never Knew About Mama Sarah Obama

Mama Sarah Obama has not only been in the limelight for being the granny to an American president but also having done amazing stuff for her community. Her love for empowering the child has seen her get featured on global news outlets; think of New York Times, Voice of America, NPR, Los Angeles Sentinel, CBC among other publications.

Obama's granny is involved in various social causes, the most outstanding being her engagement in funding education for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. Granny loves children and has a lovable personality.

There are many things you didn't know about her. For example, did you know that she visited Obama at the White House last year? Here are some other interesting things you  that may have bypassed you about the Granny:

1. She has won a UN award before

She is a champion of girls health education. She has been feted by the United Nations for her work in education. Last year, she attended the UN Women Entrepreneurship Summit in New York.

2. She's still working at her old age

At the age of 94, is the only granny in Kenya that is working on building a state of the art school.  Under her legacy, she plans to build a state of art school in K'Ogelo through her NGO, the Mama Sarah Obama Foundation.

3. Granny cares for orphans and widows

She has educated over 20 orphans in her village, from nursery to university with her own effort. She's currently organizing an entrepreneurship summit set to take place later this month.

4. She was denied an education because she is a woman

In the traditional African setting, the boy child was favored over the girl child as far as education was concerned. This is because the girl was seen as a source of wealth; once she was ready for marriage, she was 'sold off.' Hence, parents did not see the need to educate the girl child.

5. She has been a community development supporter from years

She has cared for orphans and widows way before Barack Obama became president. Away from what many might think, her foundation was started years before her grandson became the most powerful man on the planet.

6. She has won a UN award before

She has been feted by the United Nations for her work in education. Last year, she attended the UN Women Entrepreneurship Summit in New York.
