30 Gunmen Spray Bullets at Governor's Convoy

Just a few days after being sworn in as the new Inspector General, Joseph Boinett is already at task.

The new IG has today visited Mandera after the attack on the county's governor yesterday.

Here's the official statement by Boinett on the attack that left four dead and six injured ;

"Yesterday, at around 11:00 am the Governor of Mandera County Mr. Ali Roba who was travelling from Mandera to Wagadud in a convoy of six vehicles and escorted by ​the Police, was attacked between Fino and Damasa area. The attackers, who were about 30 in number, sprayed the two rear vehicles in the convoy with bullets, and they burned one of the vehicles. These gunmen who are believed to be bandits also at the same time attacked two vehicles transporting Miraa from Wajir to Mandera at the same spot. The attackers drove away with one vehicle to an unknown destination after dropping the driver. However, one of the vehicles managed to escape.During the incident, three people died, and six others sustained injuries and have been taken to hospital for treatment. The Governor escaped unhurt. The National Police Service officers together with other security agencies are on the ground pursuing the criminals and investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.I urge Kenyans to be vigilant and support the work of our officers, as well as other security agencies, to keep our country safe from such criminals. The National Police Service will keep the country updated about the incident.On my own behalf and on behalf of the National Police Service, I want to convey our sincere condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives as well as to pray for quick recovery of those hospitalized as a result of the incident.Thank you and May God bless and protect Kenya"
