In every African culture I have interacted with, the rain has always been viewed as a blessing and honestly, it isn't that hard to see why. With the rain the goddess mother earth is born anew. With the rain, the dust is driven away. With the rain comes much needed sustenance.

But in Nairobi, the arrival of the rain is met with pandemonium. Actually, any ominous cloud is enough to drive motorists into a frenzied rush to get home from work and matatu users have to contend with arbitrary fare hikes.

But there is a perfectly good reason for all this madness and that is the lack of drainage on Nairobi's roads. It is actually mindboggling that Kenya continues to produce engineers every year yet when we build roads, we do not use even the slightest modicum of common sense -we build roads with no drainage facilities.

And the people who bear the brunt of this lack of knowledge or intelligence are often South C residents or as they have come to be known, South Sea residents. Check out what havoc Kenyans have had to deal with:
