Alex Anyoro is the name of the man who changed his voice to Avril's voice, called up Machakos governor Alfred Mutua trying to solicit funds. Apparently the University of Nairobi student also runs a couple of fake celebrity accounts to swindle other innocent Kenyans.

24-year-old, Alex Anyoro Keye an Economics student at the University of Nairobi pretending to be singer Avril Nyambura popularly known by her stage and first name Avril had called Governor Mutua asking for money to help ‘her’ fund the launch of her upcoming album.

On his part, the Machakos Governor said, “I got a message from a person purporting to be Avril asking me to financially help fund ‘her’ upcoming album. However, I was suspicious and sought to set an operation with the police to determine the authenticity of the sender.”

The accused pleaded guilty and in his defense argued that he is still a student at the University of Nairobi; he is the bread winner of his family and that he had so much yearned to meet Governor Dr. Mutua who is seen by many as the most hardworking among his colleagues.

Mavoko DCIO Mr. David Wangai said police officers were shocked to find in the possession of Alex Anyoro a notebook with phone numbers of all Governors, senators and other prominent personalities in the country. He added that the accused also had the ability to change his voice to that of a woman.

“I am extremely shocked to see young people use my name to extort money from innocent people. I am glad that the police moved very fast to unearth this evil activity and that will go a long way in helping would-be victims from falling for the traps of these extortionists,” said an evidently shocked Avril.

The young man was discharged under section 35(1) of the penal code before Hon. P. Ooko (Acting Presiding Magistrate) and warned not to commit any criminal offence within a year.

Was arrested last week while trying to con a person who knows me using my name so we laid a trap for him with the police and he was arrested. But later released under Section 35 of the Penal Code.

I just hope that he changes for the better cause he is clearly a very sharp young man and can use his intelligence for things that are worth while. - Avril
