MCSK just wrapped up the announcement of the top earners of royalties in Kenya and that's nice and all but for me the real story is the fact that 10 people got to share a jackpot of 31million shillings.

Kenya has truly come a long way from the days of artists having to rely on side hustles or viewing entertainment as a hobby more than as a career. Gone are the days when only matatu manambas really dreamt about becoming artists and musicians.

Heck! At this rate I might just go and drop some music.

MCSK revealed its list of highest earning artistes in the period of July 2013- July 2014 and as expected, it was not going to be an artist earning top billing. For anyone familiar with the music industry, this might come as a surprise but for those in the know, producers and song writers usually earn more than singers and rappers.

Ergo, composer R Kay emerged top winner amongst royalty earners having produced the biggest hit songs in Kenya.

MCSK declared was kshs 28,054,147 /- out of a total collection of Kshs 31,160, 538 /- paid by the radio and TV stations in the financial year 1/06/2013 to 31/07/2014

The complete list of top ten ( local members ) is as follows :

1) Robert Kamanzi

2) Angela Chibalonza (deceased)

3) Gloria Muliro

4)Sarah Kiarie ( Sarah K )

5) Andrew Mutara Kamau ( Dennis Mutara )

6) John Mwangi Ng’ang’a ( John De Mathew )

7) Pamela Akinyi ( Les Wanyika )

8) Mercy Wangoi Wambogo ( Mercy Linah )

9) Paul Mwai Muthike

10) Dennis Waweru Kagia ( DNA )
