A Nairobi-bound passenger service vehicle caught fire on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway in Makueni County.

According to Eastern Regional Police Commander Joseph Ole Napeiyan, the 44-seater Buscar Bus Company bus was carrying 27 passengers when the incident occurred in the Mogingo district early Monday.

As stated by Napeiyan, there were no injuries or fatalities as a result of the incident because all passengers were successfully evacuated.

He said the matter was reported to Mtito Andei police station as a fire incident report.

"It occurred at 3.35 am and reported by other road users that there was a bus belonging to Buscar Bus Company which was on fire. Police responded to the scene and established that a bus registration number KCN 059A luxury Minibus with a capacity of 44 seats on board 27 passengers, driven by Daniel Menza Katana was heading towards Nairobi general direction along the Nairobi - Mombasa highway while at Mogingo area caught fire and lastly flames up," Napeiyan told the Star by phone early Monday.

"All the passengers were safely evacuated with no injuries during the incident," Napeiyan said.

The police chief said the fire was suspected to have been caused by faulty wiring.

He said efforts to remove the carnage from the road as well as mobilisation of passengers to leave the scene of the incident were ongoing.
