Ssaru is one of the biggest Gengetone artists in Kenya.

 Ssaru’s real name is Sylvia Saru. She is arguably the most popular female artist in what is a male-dominated genre, earning her the title ‘Queen of Gengetone’.

She came into the limelight after one of her freestyle raps went viral on the internet in 2019. Since then, she has been released hit after hit.

Here are more facts about her;

The rapper was born in May 2002.

Ssaru hails from Mbololo in Taita Taveta County. She was, however, raised in Nairobi’s Kayole neighborhood.

Among her well-known nicknames is "Ssaru wa Manyaru", which is a reference to marijuana.

She also completed her high school education in 2018 at Bura Girls High School.

Sylvia began pursuing her rap career right after high school. She started her journey by posting freestyles over hip-hop instrumentals on Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube. In 2019, one of her freestyle raps went viral, which marked the beginning of her career.

The song (Nyama) offered a glimpse of what to expect from her. After only six months in the music industry, Ssaru had built a loyal fan base that was ready to consume her music from wordplay, rhymes, and raunchy Sheng’ lyrics.

Notably, it marked Ssaru’s entry into the game as a female in a genre dominated by male groups such as Ethic Entertainment, Sailors Gang, and Boondocks Gang.

She currently has about 271k followers on Instagram and 81k subscribers on Youtube.

In 2021, she became the youngest female rapper to join Spotify's Equal Music Program.
