"I got twins after nine years. Twins, One died and the hospital bill was too high I appealed for help from Kenyans."
The celebrated singers son died of tuberculosis he contracted from her, while her daughter survived.
Shiru explained that a negligent doctor at a hospital in Nairobi failed to do TB tests on her babies.
She had given birth to a boy and girl prematurely at seven months, and was subsequently admitted, while her daughter was still in hospital.
The double admission of mother and daughter pushed the bill up, compelling close friends and family to fundraise.
"God finally remembered me after nine years. At seven months, I got some complications and was rushed to Aga Khan Hospital, where I was successfully operated on."
After the operation, Shiro recounted asking the doctor to show her the babies but was told not to call them that as they might not survive.
"You cannot call them babies because they might not survive. They were in ICU and I became very bitter with God. I asked God if this was my blessing that I had waited for nine years, 'Why have you done that to me?'" she recalled painfully.
She said that is the biggest pain she ever went through. She added that her two babies almost left her bankrupt as she sold almost everything.
She also praised Kenyans for coming together for her family at that difficult moment.
"My child who remained is well, beautiful and thriving. After losing one of the twins, I adopted another coz I unsuccessfully tried again. So I decided to adopt and asked God for three -two girls and a boy."
Shiru told Nene that her biological child deeply loves the adopted ones. Shiru also added that she continues to face societal pressure to get more children of her own.
