Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has indicated that the reopening of some schools in Tana River, Homa Bay, and Kisumu counties may face delays due to ongoing flood-related challenges.
"We are still receiving the names of the affected schools and will provide a comprehensive list once we have all the information," Machogu stated.
While inspecting schools in Nairobi to assess their preparedness for the resumption of learning, Machogu highlighted that alternative learning methods are being considered for the few affected schools.
"We are exploring other mechanisms for learning to continue in these schools, which constitute less than 5 percent, possibly even less than 2 percent, of the total," Machogu explained.
His remarks follow President William Ruto's announcement that schools would reopen on Monday, May 13, with assurances of adequate preparations and resources provided for the repair of learning facilities across Kenya.
However, Ruto had previously directed the Ministry of Education to postpone the reopening of all schools due to meteorological warnings indicating worsening flooding conditions.
"Meteorological reports indicate a dire situation, with predicted prolonged and intensified rainfall for the remainder of this month and beyond," Ruto emphasized.
The initial reopening date for schools was scheduled for April 29, but the postponement was deemed necessary in light of the forecasted weather conditions.
